Waterkant [2]

The second section of the Waterkant (Waterfront) is going down the drain in rapid speed because of neglect and the frantic "money first" hassle of the central market.
Anno 2007 there is an enormous gap at the corner with the Keizerstraat where the shop of H.J. de Vries once stood. The premises next door are on the brink of collapsing and the next buildings are in bad shape too.

A bit further down the street another lot lies fallow. The Police Head Office that stood here was destroyed at the beginning of the revolution of the NCO's.
Some large distinctive buildings in front of the market are loosing the struggle against neglect, only the Lutheran church miraculously stands frim. Because the surroundings are no invitation to keep up with historic building traditions the new buildings that are erected are soulless.
The Saramaccastraat, the extension of the Waterkant, featured some excellent, large trading houses in the past. Practically nothing is left from that time.
