Zones of the Cultural Property

The Cultural Property consists of three zones:

1. The oldest part of the Historic Inner City of Paramaribo (18th century), which is a Designated Conservation Zone (blue area on the map). 
         This zone is enclosed by:
         • Fort Zeelandia and surroundings
         • Sommelsdijksche Kreek
         • Tourtonnelaan, Klipstenenstraat, Heiligenweg, bank along the Waterfront of the River Suriname

2. Buffer Zone 1, Wijk Combé, a 18th/19th century urban extension (red area on the map). 
         This zone is enclosed by:
         • Grote Combéweg
         • Mahonylaan
         • Bank of the River Suriname

2. Buffer Zone 2, the 18th century urban extension (green area on the map)
         This zone is enclosed by:
         • Sommelsdijksche Kreek
         • Wanicastraat
         • Viottekreek

Essential Listed Monuments

There are nine Essential Listed Monuments in the city.

Inside the Designated Conservation Zone:
1. Fort Zeelandia Area, address: Abraham Crijnssenweg & Zeelandiaweg
      The area of Fort Zeelandia consists of:
      • the Fort Zeelandia (operated as a museum)
      • 4 former officers houses (used as office buildings)
      • 2 former commanders houses
      • ruins of "Gebouw 1790" (a former barrack)
      • a former military prison
      • a former guardhouse
2. Presidential Palace, address: Onafhankelijkheidsplein 1
3. Ministry of Finance, address: Onafhankelijkheidsplein 3
4. Roman Catholic Cathedral “St. Petrus en Paulus”, address: Gravenstraat 22-24
5. "Corner House", address: Waterkant 2
6. "De Waag" (1824), address: Waterkant 5
7. Reformed Church, address: Kerkplein

Outside the Designated Conservation Zone:
8. Lutheran Church, address: Waterkant 102
9. Synagogue "Neve Shalom" (Ashkenadzi Jewisch Community), address: Keizerstraat 82

Listed monuments

There are 244 formally protected monuments in Paramaribo. About 50% are located inside the designated Conservation Zone; about 15% inside the two designated Buffer Zones.
That means that there are still 35% outside the designated Conservation Zone and Buffer Zones. These buildings guarantee the continuation of the wooden city outside the nominated area.
